I chose Tulane because it does not feel separate from its city. The service learning program showed me that being a student can also mean showing up for the community around you. New Orleans was a big part of my decision because it has so much culture and history, and it always feels alive. I also value supportive professors and a campus that takes international student support seriously. That combination made Tulane feel like the right place for me.
One of my favorite places in New Orleans is the French Quarter because it feels like nowhere else I have been to in the United States. When I want a cozy spot closer to campus, I always end up at Z’otz Cafe. The decorations are gorgeous, the vibe is unique, and it is where my friends and I love to study for hours. I also love the Saenger Theatre because I am a huge fan of musicals, and seeing a show there feels special every time. And when I am craving something that feels like home, I go to Pho Bang. It is a wonderful Vietnamese restaurant that really helps with homesickness, and the food is always so good.
My favorite Tulane class has been ENGL 1011 with Dr. Elizabeth Rafferty. I came into Tulane with limited experience in English academic writing, and this course helped me build confidence and grow a lot as a writer. Dr. Rafferty is caring and patient, and she clearly makes an effort to support international students.
My favorite NOLA festival is Mardi Gras. I love how the whole city comes alive with music, parades, and so much local tradition. It feels like New Orleans at its most unique and joyful. And even though it is not in the city, I also really enjoy the Louisiana Renaissance Festival because it is close by and such a fun weekend trip. The costumes, performances, and energy make it feel like stepping into another world. I totally recommend it!
